Getting better

How to analyze your own FC 27 gameplay on PS5 and Xbox

You have watched a hundred tutorials and your win rate has not moved. That is not because the tutorials are bad. It is because they can tell you what good play looks like and they cannot tell you what you did. Your console already records. Twenty minutes of watching yourself is worth more than a month of watching someone else.

Written for the FC 27 season. Console capture menus change occasionally and FC 27 is not out yet, so the console steps below are written from current PS5 and Xbox Series firmware and will be re-checked at early access on 18 September 2026. The review method does not depend on any of it.
The short version
  • Set your capture shortcut once. It takes two minutes and you never think about it again.
  • Only review the goals you concede, and watch the ten seconds before each one, not the shot.
  • Ask the same four questions every time so the pattern becomes obvious.
  • Write five words per goal. The repeat offender is your leak.
  • Review defeats within a day, while you still remember what you were trying to do.

Recording on PS5

The Create button is to the left of the touchpad, and by default a single press opens the Create menu with New Screenshot, New Recording and Recent Gameplay on it.

  1. Go to Settings, then Captures and Broadcasts, then Captures.
  2. Open Shortcuts for Create Button and pick a mapping you will remember. Most people want a press and hold to start a manual recording, so you can hit it at kick off and forget about it.
  3. Set the recent gameplay length to its longest option so that after a bad goal you can save what already happened without having planned ahead. On PS5 this goes up to an hour.
  4. Set the resolution to 1080p. Higher looks nicer and fills the drive faster, and you are looking at positioning, not pores.

To get clips off the console, either plug in a USB drive and copy them from the media gallery, or turn on the option that sends captures to the PlayStation App so they land on your phone automatically. The second one is the difference between reviewing your games and meaning to.

Recording on Xbox

The Share button sits under the guide button on the Series controller.

  1. Go to Settings, Preferences, then Capture and share.
  2. Set what to capture when the Share button is pressed and how long the "record what happened" clip should be. The internal drive limits you to short clips, so plug in an external USB drive if you want to record full matches.
  3. Set the capture location to the external drive if you have one, and drop the capture resolution if you are on a Series S and tight on space.
  4. Clips upload to your Xbox account and show up in the Xbox app on your phone, which is the easiest way to scrub through them.

Both consoles do this well enough that you never need a capture card. If you already stream or have a card, even better, because you get the full uncut match.

What to actually watch

Do not sit down and watch a full 90 minutes. You will get bored, you will skip, and you will learn nothing. Watch the goals you conceded, and watch them like this:

Start ten seconds before the goal

The shot is never the mistake. The mistake happened two or three passes earlier, when a player left a position or you committed someone you should not have. Rewind ten seconds and play it at half speed.

Ask the same four questions every time

  1. Who was I controlling five seconds before the ball went in? If the answer is a centre back in midfield, you have found the goal already.
  2. Where was my CDM? On the majority of goals from inside the box, the holding midfielder is either chasing the ball or standing in a position that covers nothing.
  3. Was I sprinting? Watch your own defender's run. If he is at full speed in the last three seconds, you lost the duel before contact.
  4. Was the space behind my line or in front of it? Behind means your depth is wrong. In front means your pressing is wrong. Those are opposite fixes and people constantly apply the wrong one.

Write five words per goal

Literally five. "CB stepped, striker in behind." "Chased byline, cutback to D." "Both CMs upfield on counter." Do this for a few games and one line will start repeating. That repeat is your leak, and fixing it is worth more than everything else you could do this week.

The other two things worth counting

  • Turnovers in your own half. Every time you lose the ball inside your own half, note whether you were sprinting when you received it. This number is usually much worse than people expect, and it feeds directly into the goals you concede. More on fixing it in first touch and possession basics.
  • Shots from outside the box. If more than a third of your shots are from range, your attacking problem is patience, not finishing.

The delay test

Everybody has games where the connection is genuinely bad. Footage lets you tell the difference instead of guessing. Watch the moment you blame: did your input not register at all, or did your player do exactly what you asked and the ask was wrong?

Most of the time the input registered fine and the decision was bad. That is good news, because you can fix a decision. Be honest here or the whole exercise is a waste of twenty minutes.

Review while it is fresh

Watch defeats within a day. A week later you cannot remember what you were trying to do, so you cannot tell a bad plan from bad execution. Same night is best, once you have calmed down. Reviewing while tilted turns into shouting at your own defenders, which is fun and useless.

Why almost nobody keeps this up

Because it is 20 to 30 minutes per game, every game, and after a long session the last thing you want is to watch yourself concede again. The players who do it consistently improve much faster than the ones who do not, and there are not many of them, and that is exactly the gap.

That is the reason we are building ShowThem.ai. You upload the recording you already have sitting on your console, and you get back the same pass a good player would give you if they sat next to you for half an hour: every goal against you with a cause, the timestamp it happened at, which player you were controlling, and the specific thing to do differently. Not a stats page. Nobody ever ranked up because they learned their pass completion percentage.

It is not live yet. It is being built now and the first match analysis is free at launch. If you want it the day it opens, put your email in below. In the meantime, the manual method on this page works, costs nothing, and is the single highest value habit in this entire hub.

Your first review, step by step

  1. Set the capture shortcut on your console tonight.
  2. Play four games. After each defeat, save the recording immediately.
  3. Sit down with one defeat. Watch only the goals against, ten seconds before each, at half speed.
  4. Answer the four questions for each goal. Write five words.
  5. Whatever line repeats, that is your focus for the next three sessions. Nothing else.

Do that once and you will know more about your own game than you learned from the last fifty tutorials, because for the first time the footage is of you.
